The Read-Aloud Handbook

An adult uses about 9 rare words per thousand in a conversation with a three-year-old and 17 rare words per thousand in a conversation with another adult.   A typical children's book will contain about 30 rare words per thousand.

Reading aloud to a child nurtures a child's listening skills.   "Listening comprehension feeds reading comprehension."

Most children's listening abilities are several grades beyond their reading abilities until eighth grade.  Make sure to include vocabulary-rich books beyond the child's reading level in your daily reading time.
