Books for Speech/Language Therapy from
Usborne Books & More
Books are a wonderful way for parents to "work" with children who have
language disorders. Some of the goals of professional speech and language therapy
include:
answering questions after a story
answering yes/no questions
increasing vocabulary
increasing reading comprehension
learning multiple meaning words
learning synonyms & antonyms
understanding and using basic concepts (up, down, wet, dry, first, last, etc.)
social skills (not interrupting, making friends, using manners in conversation)
sequencing events (what happened first, second, next, last)
Usborne and Kane/Miller books are especially great, because parents enjoy them as
much as children! The children are engaged and drawn to the pictures, and language
goals are met by teaching the vocabulary used throughout the book, asking questions
about what has happened, letting the child make predictions about what might happen next,
and letting the child sequence what happened in the story.
